“Research findings might suggest otherwise,” I retort, only to be met with a rather unpleasant burp from him. Growing impatient, I decide it’s time to kick off our exploration.

Our first stop is the childhood residence of a comedian and actor (his mother was named Mary) located on the western outskirts of a town. The comedian’s father was employed near the town center, working at a university that also educated a physicist (mother: Jean) frequently featured on BBC Radio 4. We make our second stop here, before proceeding to a house where a mathematician (mother: Frances) was a regular visitor. All of these individuals were or are outstanding writers.

Aside from this, we visit a cathedral that lacks flying buttresses and a hospital devoid of any medical personnel.

My friend follows along, albeit reluctantly. Your fishing adventures in Scotland will be dictated by the seasons: spring marks the salmon’s return; summer draws trout enthusiasts to rivers and lochs; autumn brings salmon on their upstream journey. Even winter has its appeal for those pursuing grayling. For those short on time or just starting their Scottish fishing journey, this guide compiles some of the finest fishing spots I’ve discovered over years of angling, including insights from my guide to wild fishing. All locations are budget-friendly, with several being free of charge.

1. Loch Leven, Perth & Kinross

Loch Leven, surrounded by sweetgrass with its delightful vanilla scent, is renowned for hosting a large population of breeding ducks and is celebrated as a premier brown trout destination. Its unique brown trout strain, Salmo Levensis, has been used globally for stocking various water bodies. Following trial efforts with both brown and rainbow trout in the mid-20th century, the loch has now returned to its roots as a natural brown trout fishery. Note that fishing is permitted only from the supplied boats; bank fishing is not allowed. A RSPB reserve is located at the southern end, ideal for viewing ospreys during spring and summer, with a vibrant array of wildfowl in autumn and winter.

2. Loch Long, Argyll and Bute

While fishing at Loch Long, you might occasionally catch a glimpse of the Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, but mostly you will enjoy the serene environment. This lengthy loch, stretching 20 miles to the Firth of Clyde, is a tranquil haven for anglers. Depending on regulations, you can fish with bait or spinners from the shore or a boat, and while migratory species like salmon and sea trout must be returned, you can still catch brown trout, cod, whiting, plaice, mackerel, skate, wrasse, pollack, and spurdog among others. A favored spot lies about a quarter mile past the Arrochar hotel, especially during the mid-June mackerel run. Use light tackle for catching wrasse close to the shore.

3. Loch Doon, Ayrshire

Loch Doon has a rich history, having been a training ground for pilots during WWII due to its favorable landscape. This lake is a prime spot for fly-fishing, home to a substantial population of wild brown trout, typically around 8oz, along with pike, perch, and char. Anglers can park beside the loch’s medieval castle ruins, believed to have been constructed by Robert the Bruce, and follow a marked path to the shore. Keep an eye out for nesting ospreys near the Roundhouse café at the loch’s summit.

4. Newcastleton, Scottish Borders

This picturesque village features the Liddel Water and is ideal for fly-fishing, particularly from July to September, with September being the peak. The salmon season begins on July 1, with fish moving into the Lower Liddel during optimal conditions. You can expect to catch good-sized salmon, sea trout, and brown trout here. A heavier rod is recommended for targeting the robust fish. Local tickets can be obtained from establishments such as the Eskdale hotel.

5. Loch A’ Chaorainn, Argyll and Bute

Situated six miles northwest of Tarbert on the Mull of Kintyre, Loch A’ Chaorainn offers a delightful fishing experience. The relatively gentle slopes make casting easier, and while the fishing can sometimes be slow, encounters with rising brown trout are common during the right moments, which may vary from early morning to late evening. The typical size ranges from 8-12oz. You can also explore 13 other lochs with your Glenbeg day permit, allowing for flexibility if the trout aren’t cooperating. Loch a’ Mhinn is particularly recommended for its good casting conditions.

6. Fillan River, Perth & Kinross

This river flows near Crianlarich, a favored spot for hill walkers, surrounded by stunning mountainous scenery. While insects can be a nuisance, the rewards include brown trout, salmon, and char. An effective fly combination might include a gold-ribbed hare’s ear paired with a black spider. Anglers usually prefer fishing upstream of the viaduct, but the entire river offers challenging yet rewarding angling. To increase your chances, use light leaders and aim to cast your line far.

7. Avon River, Lothian

The seven-mile stretch from Avonbridge to Torphichen Bridge is an excellent choice for fishing enthusiasts. After rainfall, the river offers fantastic brown trout fishing opportunities, with various methods including fly, bait, spin, and ledgering all viable. A diversity of pools, gorges, and open farmland along this stretch provide ample fishing experiences, alongside shared beats with different clubs that also feature sea trout fishing near the estuary. Dry flies and emergers work particularly well in the upstream areas.

8. Achmelvich Beach, Highland

This stunningly beautiful and sheltered beach in Sutherland, known for its crystal-clear waters and white sand reminiscent of Caribbean shores, is located opposite the coastal village of Lochinver, with the Hebridean islands of Lewis and Harris just offshore. While it can become crowded during summer, the bay is home to cod, haddock, whiting, pollack, saithe, and mackerel. Use float fishing techniques for wrasse, pollack, and saithe, especially during mackerel season.

9. Lochan Fada, Highland

A scenic trek leads to Lochan Fada, nestled deep in the wilds of Letterewe in Wester Ross, located three miles northeast of Loch Maree. Here, anglers can find medium-sized brown trout, though larger specimens have also been reported. While it’s a 90-minute hike to reach the loch, the rewarding fishing and the remote atmosphere enhance the overall experience. For those interested, overnight camping is possible, but it’s advisable to verify with the estate about stalking activities during your visit.

10. River Don, Aberdeenshire

The River Don is a lovely area to explore, featuring deep pools and fast-flowing stretches weaving through picturesque, tree-lined landscapes. Trout are plentiful, with some exceeding 5lb in weight, and anglers can expect to see sea trout migrating from June onwards. The river has 13 named salmon pools; while the Kemnay area is known for brown trout, catches can be found throughout the river’s peaceful glides and slow pools. Optimal fishing occurs in April and May in the upper reaches, transitioning to the middle and lower sections as conditions evolve.

Upon our arrival in Calama, we discovered that our suitcase had not made it on our flight from Santiago. We promptly filed a lost baggage claim. Upon my arrival, I presented my name at the stylish gates and drove along a winding path through elegantly landscaped grounds. The impressive house, along with a sparkling manmade lake, came into view, and I noticed staff members lined up to perform the traditional welcome.

While such a greeting could feel over the top, the local staff were remarkably approachable, genuine, and efficient. One team member swiftly grabbed my suitcase from the trunk, while another led me into the main building. The third, who opened the car door and took my keys, casually inquired if I would like the vehicle to be valet parked. I was surprised to hear that “anything is possible” here, a bold claim that it seems they truly live up to at Ballyfin.

It’s well-known that Ballyfin has hosted an array of famous guests, including George and Amal Clooney, who reserved the entire property for a family affair, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who chose this majestic location for their honeymoon. Given its relatively brief history in the hospitality sector, it’s remarkable to see such high-profile visitors drawn to this opulent hotel.

The coat of arms of the Coote family, the house’s original proprietors, is proudly displayed above the entrance. Constructed in the 1820s by Sir Charles Coote, the property was designed by noted Irish architects Sir Richard and William Morrison. The staircase is adorned with portraits of the Coote family, showcasing them in their ornate Regency attire, as they lived here over a century. In the late 20th century, the estate transitioned to the Patrician Brothers, who operated an educational institution on the grounds.

In 2002, the dilapidated 3,250 square meter estate caught the eye of Chicago-based businessman Fred Krehbiel and his wife, Kay, a native of Kerry. The art aficionados dedicated nine years to restoring the property to its former glory, meticulously working on intricate marquetry floors and lavish plaster ceilings, while acquiring artifacts that belonged to the Cootes. They opened the hotel’s doors in 2011, and today it is stewarded by Krehbiel’s sons, Liam and Jay, who are committed to nurturing their parents’ vision.

As a visitor, I was immediately captivated by the surroundings, from the grand saloon adorned with plaster columns to the 24-meter library, which stretches along the southern side of the house—a perfect venue for enjoying tea and scones. My afternoon included traditional country activities, and when I met the clay pigeon shooting instructor, he shared his deep connection to the venue; he had initially worked as a bricklayer during its transformation into a hotel. He even reminisced about his own experiences as a student at the school located here, which is now repurposed as the hotel’s laundry area. The local staff’s fondness for their workplace and its evolution is truly commendable.

To my surprise, after a couple of practice shots, I managed to hit six clays consecutively. Afterward, I rejuvenated in one of the hotel’s stunning rooms—the Westmeath—featuring an exquisite French bed as the centerpiece. Above the elegant marble fireplace hung a portrait of a notable figure, Marianne Jeffreys, who was born at Blarney Castle, Co Cork, in the 18th century, later becoming the Countess of Westmeath. It was a delightful coincidence; my first job had been as a cleaner at Blarney Castle Hotel.

Feeling at home in my new surroundings, I descended for a glass of champagne in the opulent gold drawing room before enjoying dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Richard Picard-Edwards in the formal dining room. The meal began with a starter of West Cork crab accompanied by mackerel, gooseberry, and buttermilk, followed by perfectly cooked turbot with cavolo nero and garden turnip. The dessert—an almond dacquoise complemented by orange ganache—was nothing short of exceptional.

This exquisite experience exemplifies why Ballyfin is a must-visit. If an overnight stay is beyond reach, it’s noteworthy that since last summer, reservations for dinner are available to non-residents. This allows a larger audience to appreciate the grandeur of Ballyfin, encouraging others to unearth their own connection to this meticulously preserved historic site.

These accommodations reflect the lush surroundings with vine-patterned carpets, lotus flower artwork, light wooden furniture, fern-colored cushions, and crisp white linens. Lower floor rooms overlook the freeform pool, surrounded by tropical palm trees, while higher floors offer stunning ocean views; the tenth and eleventh floors deliver sweeping seascapes.

All accommodations come with balconies, except for ground-level rooms, which open directly onto gardens frequented by orioles. A unique design aspect is that some smaller rooms (Superior Hill View and Deluxe Sea View) have bathtubs, while others in larger categories feature showers. Culinary Experience

Breakfast favorites include nasi goreng and three-egg omelettes, along with uniquely crafted appams topped with coconut at the expansive Silver Shell Café, which serves a diverse menu from breakfast to dinner. Most visitors enjoy the buffet, which features a variety of options including a satay station, noodle bar, and an assortment of desserts like mango cream puffs and red velvet cakes. Additionally, a rotating selection of dishes is offered every evening, showcasing local Singaporean flavors one night and seafood the next.

Children can choose from an array of options including tomato pasta and chicken fried rice, and there is a fun cotton candy station. Although breakfast tends to get busy, with wait times that might reach half an hour, staff proactively provide coffee, juice, and balloon sculpture entertainment while guests wait. For convenient dining at the beach, guests can order items like passionfruit mint sodas and wagyu burgers via QR codes from Siloso Beach Bar, complemented by the Bubble Bar’s whimsical cocktails.

Resort Amenities

The beautiful pool, framed by fragrant frangipani and vibrant flame trees, provides a lively atmosphere filled with fun activities such as bingo and face painting for kids, and aqua aerobic classes for adults. The pool is thoughtfully divided into three areas: a shallow section for children, a deeper zone for families, and an adults-only lap pool, all featuring relaxing whirlpools. Additionally, multiple splash zones with jets and slides decorated with playful monkey sculptures are ideal for keeping children entertained. The beachside Sea Sports Centre offers kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards, while kids aged 5-12 can enjoy the Cool Zone with crafts and sports activities, supervised by a friendly team. Parents are able to access the gym or visit Chi, the Spa for soothing treatments. The day can be concluded with sunrise yoga sessions or outdoor movie screenings on the beach.

Siloso Beach, right at the doorstep, has an energetic vibe with thrilling zip lines and vibrant beach bars. The Siloso Point cable car station is also conveniently close, as is the Imbiah Trail, where guided night safaris offer opportunities to spot fascinating wildlife. Easy transportation options like an electric monorail and beach shuttles connect to major attractions, including the shops at Beach Station and the sensory experiences at Sensoryscape. While I haven’t pursued therapy, I have tried various methods to cope. However, by late 2024, I found most of my coping mechanisms depleted after my partner received a sudden cancer diagnosis and faced urgent surgery. In the midst of extreme stress, I decided to retreat and brace myself for what seemed to be another difficult winter, following a year filled with hardship.

As I dealt with profound grief and my partner’s illness, I also faced the loss of friendships. As various challenging circumstances unfolded, it became apparent that not everyone could remain connected during such trying times.

Yet, amid this unusual pause in my life, I managed to encourage my 18-year-old son, Rider, to embark on his well-deserved gap year earlier than planned following a challenging year filled with his A-level exams. With my partner beginning three months of postoperative preventive chemotherapy and Rider’s friends scattered across universities or off on their travels, there was little excitement left at home, which felt almost devoid of joy.

The support from the “Bank of Mum and Dad” helped ensure that Rider took a flight to Brisbane on December 5 last year. Upon arrival, he was greeted by my Australian half-brother, Jonny, sister-in-law, Felicity, and two of my nephews, Dominic, 10, and Memphis, 14 months, whom I had never met. It had been 16 years since my last trip to Australia (when I took a six-year-old Jackson along), and 12 years since my Australian relatives had visited me; the latest addition to their family arrived exactly one month after Jackson’s passing.

With the loss of both my parents—my Aussie-born, UK-based father in 2019 and my mother who returned to Australia 45 years ago in 2020 due to Covid—my remaining family was now on the other side of the globe. Despite living in the UK for my entire adult life, I felt an undeniable connection to Australia.

Reflecting on my early memories from the year I spent in Australia at the age of three, when my mother briefly separated from my father, I recalled visiting my mother’s roots as a country girl from an expansive sheep station. After my parents reconciled, I returned from my adventure in the Australian bush back to London suburbs, accompanied by a sun-kissed tan and a thick Aussie accent.

After Rider settled in, I anxiously reached out for updates via WhatsApp. Previously, he and Jackson navigated the complexities of their blended family, always having each other’s support. Now, Rider faced the daunting task of managing his newly-separated yet grieving parents on his own, which was certainly a challenging balance for all involved. Thankfully, technology allowed us to stay connected.

The emotional pull was undeniable. Nevertheless, I understood that having Rider far away during another emotionally challenging winter was for the best. Not long before he passed, Jackson reflected on 2023 being “the perfect summer.” In an ironic twist, following Jackson’s death, 2023 transformed into my own version of a “perfect summer.” Yet, as I looked forward, the promise of future joyful summers felt ever elusive.

As I prepared for my partner’s chemotherapy treatment, I committed to being there for him while also contemplating how to reclaim my own space afterward. As Rider celebrated Christmas in Australia with barbecues, swimming, and enjoying his time at Surfers Paradise with his cousin, I devised a plan. When Rider traveled to Sydney for New Year’s and then to Melbourne, I pondered the prospect of joining him on his gap year.
